Tedeschi Trucks Band comes to Isleta Amphitheater with Whiskey Myers
Tedeschi Trucks Band will make a stop at Isleta Amphitheater on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The band is currently on a co-headlining tour with Whiskey Myers.
Lately, Derek Trucks can’t believe the blessings in his life.
The long-time musician has definitely put in the work — he’s seeing the payoffs.
Over the course of his career, he teamed up with his wife, Susan Tedeschi, to create the Grammy Award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band.
“We recently played Red Rocks for the 21st time,” Trucks says. “We’ve raised two kids together. Our son just got married and our daughter is going to turn 21 soon. The band has been together for over a decade now. There are ups and downs and we’ve put each other through the fire. It’s been a trip. We feel very lucky that the band is in a great place.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band is on tour with Whiskey Myers and will stop at Isleta Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19.
In addition to the tour, Tedeschi Trucks Band is releasing an album with Leon Russell called “Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’),” which comes out Sept. 12.
The album will be released on global streaming platforms, CD and vinyl, marking the first time the tribute performance will be available since its occurrence 10 years ago.
Trucks says the album is a vibrant tribute to one of the most iconic live rock collaborations in music history.
Originally led by Cocker and keyboardist and bandleader Russell in 1970, “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” brought together a massive ensemble of musicians.
In Sept. 2015, Tedeschi Trucks Band revived the event, infusing it with their blend of Southern soul, blues and rock.
The tribute concert took place at the Virginia-based LOCKN’ Festival, 45 years after the original tour.
A 12-piece ensemble and Russell welcomed original Mad Dogs members, such as Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear and Chris Stainton, along with special guests Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Warren Haynes, Anders Osborne and Dave Mason.
“Leon and Sue had an amazing connection,” Trucks says. “I think he felt that we were kindred spirits, and I think he appreciated it. We were supposed to do the show with Joe Cocker and then he passed away. This whole idea started because we had done a show at the Beacon Theatre and we were watching the original Mad Dogs. Leon became a big part of the puzzle and then it was off to the races. We captured an amazing night of music.”
Trucks is also looking forward to returning for the Aug. 19 show at Isleta Amphitheater.
“Albuquerque is an amazing place,” he says. “We always try to sneak to Duran’s Pharmacy for some food. We will hit up the trading post and there’s some amazing flamenco there. Vicente Griego is a great friend of ours and he’s world-class when it comes to flamenco singing.”
The band has also completed another album — which will be due out next year.
Seventeen new tunes were recorded, Trucks says, and he expects the album to have 11 on it.
“We will work a new song into the set each night,” he says. “This batch of tunes seems to work well with our catalog of music.”
Trucks says if there’s enough time, the band tries to hit up local music venues to check out the scene.
“The band has been known to join in on stage,” he says with a laugh. “We try to have fun with everything we do. It’s not lost on us how fortunate we are in this industry.”
