New Mexico travelers always need water with them — the question is always how much and in what containers?

At a minimum, carry a container with one gallon of potable water per person or pet per trip, provided you are able to refill your water. You’ll be glad you did, especially when the dog — talking about you Ora — knocks over her bowl or kicks dirt into it.

The easiest, most convenient source is often a dollar store, where for less than $1.50, you usually can get a filled, closed gallon container.

For less than $25, you can buy a refillable HDPE (high-density polyethylene) water jug. HDPE means it is safe to drink. But you must clean it out and refill each trip to be safe.

Grocery stores often have Glacier Water refill stations or other machines to refill your water carriers.

Journal Outside will have a complete report on how to treat water and where to get it in coming editions.
