Ever dreamed of taking a shot at the Pit? Here's your chance

Before the Lobos take their shots, you can take your own.

The University of New Mexico Hospital is offering free flu vaccines at the Pit before the men’s basketball team’s game against Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The shots will be available when the doors open at 5:30 p.m. — look for the UNM Hospital team around the main entrance in the northeast corner, UNM Health said in a news release. No appointment is needed.

“Getting the flu shot helps protect both you and those around you, especially as we enter the winter and holiday season,” said UNM Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Maribeth Thornton in a statement. “Vaccinating against the flu significantly reduces your chances of being hospitalized with the virus or becoming seriously ill.”

Influenza A has been on the rise in the state since the end of October, and the largest group testing positive for the flu are children ages 0-12, according to UNM Health, citing data from TriCore.

“The largest group of adults testing positive for the virus are ages 26-45,” UNM Health said, adding that, historically, spikes in flu cases occur in mid-December.

If you can’t make this game, UNM Health is planning a similar event at a UNM women’s game in the near future.

And the state Department of Heath says insured adults can always contact their local pharmacy or primary care provider to schedule a vaccination appointment. Providers can be found in an online map at vaccine.doh.nm.gov or call the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (833-796-8773) for assistance.

Uninsured or underinsured adults can contact their nearest public health office at nmhealth.org/location/public.
