Free at-home COVID-19 tests are coming back

Remember those free at-home COVID-19 tests? Well, they’re making a comeback.

New Mexico Department of Health officials on Thursday encouraged residents to place their orders for the free tests, which can be ordered starting Monday at COVIDTests.gov. The limit is four per household.

“Don’t wait for symptoms to appear! Get ahead of the curve with free COVID-19 tests delivered to your doorstep,” DOH Secretary Patrick Allen said in a statement. “Order now and stay one step ahead of the virus.”

The free tests come thanks to $600 million in federal money awarded to a dozen domestic manufacturers. The money will help purchase 200 million tests, the federal Department of Health and Human Services said.

The tests come following the closing of many federal COVID programs this year. But they also come as health officials expect the number of cases to begin increasing in the fall and winter months.

According to the DOH, the tests are “designed to detect COVID variants currently circulating and are intended for use by the end of the year.”

COVID cases in New Mexico stood at 864 for the week of Sept. 8-14, according to DOH data.
