A rider on a stolen motorcycle was thrown and killed after hitting a pedestrian who was crossing East Central on Friday night.

The pedestrian was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition and described as stable Saturday, the Albuquerque Police Department said.

Police said the motorcycle rider hadn’t been identified.

According to APD, which reported the incident around 8:45 p.m., Traffic Unit officers were sent to the crash at Central and Chama, just east of Louisiana.

Based on the initial investigation and witnesses, a repainted Kawasaki bike that had been reported stolen was speeding west on Central as two pedestrians were crossing the street from south to north.

“As they were on the westbound lanes of Central, one pedestrian was struck by the motorcycle,” APD said in a Saturday morning news release.

The rider lost control of the bike and was thrown from it, sliding until hitting a light post in the median.

“The motorcycle rider was not wearing a helmet and sustained a severe head injury,” dying at the scene, police said.

APD said high speed on the part of the rider was a major contributing factor in the crash.
