1 dead in overnight NE ABQ hit and run
For the second time in less than a week, a person driving a stolen motorcycle died in a crash in Albuquerque.
Police said the latest crash happened early Wednesday, just after midnight, at Odelia and Edith NE in the Martineztown area.
According to police, the rider on a Ducati motorcycle was traveling west on Odelia in the far right lane and approaching Edith. A BMW sport utility vehicle was traveling behind the bike.
“At some point, the BMW rear-ended the motorcycle and dragged it for approximately half a mile onto Broadway NE,” an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman said in a news release. “The motorcyclist was ejected ... after about a quarter mile into the collision.”
The BMW went north, parking at Broadway and Arvada, and witnesses said three people inside the SUV left it and fled.
The injured motorcyclist was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died.
After running the motorcycle’s vehicle identification number through the National Crime Information Center, it was found that the bike was reported stolen. A gun was also found near the bike.
“The BMW was sealed pending a search warrant,” APD said. “The crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run and charges will be pending.”
On Friday, a rider on a stolen motorcycle was thrown and killed after hitting a pedestrian who was crossing East Central.
