Albuquerque police arrest suspect in fatal stabbing, search continues for his brother
The Albuquerque Police Department has arrested two brothers suspected in the fatal stabbing of a 73-year-old man outside a cannabis dispensary on West Central.
Jesus Secatero, 24, and Antonio Secatero, 25, are charged with an open count of murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the Jan. 27 killing of Fred Tapia.
APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said Jesus Secatero was arrested Wednesday, while Antonio Secatero turned himself into police Thursday evening.
Jesus Secatero is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, while Antonio Secatero was going to be booked into jail.
On Jan. 27, APD was dispatched to a stabbing at Breaking Bud dispensary in the 8700 block of Central NW, according to a criminal complaint filed at Metropolitan Court.
When officers arrived, they saw Tapia and another man bleeding from the chest. After they were taken to a hospital, the driver told police he had swerved to drive around two men and a woman walking in the street.
When they got out, one man asked the driver why they were trying to run them over. An argument ensued before one of the men kicked Tapia in the chest, according to the complaint.
Surveillance video from the dispensary later showed one of the men try to stab Tapia and the driver, who grabbed a metal pipe and confronted the men, the complaint states.
Shortly after, according to the complaint, all four men were throwing rocks at each other when the driver hit one of the men twice with the pipe, slipped and got stabbed multiple times before the men fled.
Police were later able to identify the two men as Jesus and Antonio Secatero through a Motor Vehicle Division database, confirming they were brothers through police databases and social media, the complaint states.
On Jan. 29, according to the complaint, Tapia described the men to police, adding that he did not believe the man who kicked him was the one who stabbed him.
He died the next day from complications during surgery, the complaint states.
According to the complaint, on Jan. 31, the surviving victim identified Antonio Secatero as being one of the men who attacked him.
Two witnesses confirmed the driver’s statement about the incident to police, according to the criminal complaint.
