The Albuquerque Police Department has released the name of the 20-year-old man who was killed after wounding an officer in a shootout Thursday afternoon at an apartment in the foothills.

APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos identified the man as Emmanuel Campos. He said Campos was wanted on two warrants: one out of Santa Fe last month, and another from July 4 in Albuquerque.

Gallegos said Campos was also considered a person of interest in a Albuquerque homicide.

The officer who was shot in the arm by Campos was treated at a hospital and released Thursday night.

Hours earlier, APD went to arrest Campos as part of clearing the warrant backlog.Hours earlier, APD went to arrest Campos as part of an effort to clear a backlog of warrants.

Campos holed up in an apartment at the Copper Ridge Apartments near Tramway and Copper.

The SWAT team responded and tried to go into the apartment after learning of a child in “duress” inside, according to police. Gallegos said Campos fired a gun at the SWAT team — shooting one officer — before police fired back, killing him.

“Over the next several months, APD will continue to investigate and analyze this incident,” he said. “Detectives will continue interviewing any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests.”

Court records show Campos was wanted on a warrant issued out of Santa Fe on June 28 related to a shooting. The case is sealed, so no more details are available in that case.

And on July 2, a New Mexico State Police officer tried to pull over Campos in Downtown Albuquerque when he sped off, according to court records. The officer found the car crashed into a light pole soon after and saw the driver, Campos, run off on foot.

Court records show the officer was able to tackle Campos to the ground following a scuffle between the two. Campos told paramedics he had been drinking and taken ecstasy before the crash.

Campos was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. It is unclear if he was ever taken to jail.

Two days later, a warrant was issued for Campos’ arrest.
