Albuquerque police on Tuesday identified the man shot and killed by officers Monday morning during a domestic dispute investigation on the Southwest Mesa.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said Brian Womack, 43, was shot at the Valle De Atrisco Apartments. Womack had no prior criminal history, according to court records.

The shooting was the 13th time APD has shot, or shot at, someone this year and the 10th incident that was fatal.

For 30 minutes, police tried to negotiate with the couple after they “refused to exit” the apartment, according to APD Chief Harold Medina.

Officers forced entry into the unit and saw a man hitting a woman over the head with a hammer. At least one officer fired “more than one round,” killing Womack.

The woman, whose injuries were “non-life-threatening,” was taken to the hospital.

Medina did not say how many officers fired their weapons or give any other details.
