Albuquerque teen allegedly killed man before getting into police chase with body in the vehicle
An 18-year-old was charged after allegedly shooting and killing a man in the North Valley before storing the body in his SUV and getting into a high-speed police pursuit Monday evening.
Dominic Speer is charged with an open count of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated fleeing, two counts of tampering with evidence, criminal damage to property and other lesser charges.
The Albuquerque Police Department did not identify the man who had been killed.
Police were dispatched to the 2900 block of Carlton NW, east of Second between Candelaria and Menaul, around 8 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a shooting, according to Gilbert Gallegos, APD spokesperson.
Arriving officers spoke with the 911 caller, who said someone had been shot and a man — later identified as Speer — had dragged someone out of a vehicle, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
“Officers did not locate a shooting victim at the scene, but they located a gun projectile and blood in the area where the 911 caller said he saw a man being dragged,” Gallegos said.
Officers saw Speer’s vehicle leaving the scene, Gallegos said. Police yelled for him to stop and he sped away. Officers were able to identify the vehicle as a Ford Bronco and got a portion of the license plate.
Officers used automated license plate readers to find the Bronco and, after a pursuit reaching speeds over 100 mph, Speer crashed into a light pole and ran toward a Walmart near Unser and Eagle Ranch, the complaint states.
Speer eventually surrendered to police and was detained around 11 p.m.
Police checked the Bronco and found a dead man inside the truck, according to the complaint. Officers also found a gun and magazine in the rocks at the scene.
Speer told officers that a friend forced him to drive the vehicle, the complaint states. He said the friend had Speer drop him off shortly before officers detained him. Police said Speer was the only person in the vehicle when they apprehended him.
“My homie shot somebody and put him in the truck and then made me go,” Speer told police, according to the complaint. “The firearm, that wasn’t mine bro, I told you he literally forced me. He made me drop him off right after the chase and he left and left that guy in the car.”
