Actor Alec Baldwin pleaded not guilty Wednesday and waived his first court appearance after his indictment last month on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 fatal shooting on the New Mexico set of the movie "Rust."

Baldwin will remain free on personal recognizance pending trial in the case, a Santa Fe judge ordered Wednesday.

First Judicial District Judge T. Glenn Ellinton released Baldwin on condition that he doesn't own a gun, abstains from alcohol and avoids contact with potential witnesses except in connection with the "Rust" movie and other business matters.

A grand jury indicted Baldwin on Jan. 19 about nine months after prosecutors dropped nearly identical charges against him, citing "new facts" that demanded additional investigation.

Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of the movie, was pointing a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal on the set. The gun fired, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
