Three hikers were found Saturday night after being lost in the Sandias.

At about 9 p.m., the Albuquerque Police Department's Open Space Unit was called to help find the hikers on the La Luz Trail in the Sandia Mountains, APD spokeswoman Franchesca Perdue said.

Officers along with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office's Open Space Unit and Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council team hiked about 6 miles in deep snow and below freezing temperatures before finding the hikers, Perdue said.

One hiker suffered from cold exposure and was airlifted to a local hospital. Their injury was not considered to be life-threatening while the other two hikers were evaluated by medical staff before leaving on their own accord, she said.

New Mexico State Police air support unit also assisted in the rescue efforts, Perdue said.
