The search of Elephant Butte Lake for a missing man stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base has ended with the man found deceased.
Monday afternoon, Kirtland said in a news release that the unnamed man, assigned to the 351st Special Warfare Training Squadron, was recovered in the water near Lion’s Beach Campground area at approximately 12:55 p.m.
“Despite extensive search and rescue efforts and the inability to find the Airman, activities switched from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” Kirtland wrote in a statement.
Daniel Fernandez, public information officer for Kirtland, said the man would not be named until his next of kin was notified.
Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the cause of death after an autopsy is done, Fernandez said.
Kirtland said the “incident remains under investigation and additional information will be released as appropriate.”
