Police allege Andy Doreste-Saumell, 28, was racing with a second driver at high speed on Louisiana NE when both vehicles struck a white Toyota Camry in the intersection of Dellwood NE about 7:20 p.m., according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

The collision killed Jenna Hamilton, the driver of the Camry, and critically injured two 14-year-old children riding in her car, the complaint said.

Also killed was Tyler Turnbull, the driver of a Mini Cooper, who police said was racing with Doreste-Saumell when both cars struck the Camry.

Doreste-Saumell was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center early Monday on two counts of vehicular homicide, recklessly caused, and single counts of reckless driving, street racing and child endangerment.

Doreste-Saumell told police he was driving a BMW when he saw the green Mini Cooper “driving fast” near Louisiana and Menaul NE, the complaint said. Doreste-Saumell said he changed lanes and was “keeping up with the speeds” of the Cooper Mini at the time of the crash, it said.

A traffic video at the intersection of Louisiana and Dellwood shows the BMW “traveling at a high rate of speed” when Hamilton’s Camry pulled into the intersection, resulting in the collision, the complaint said.

Doreste-Saumell and his 6-year-old son, who was riding in the BMW, were uninjured, police said.

The Cooper Mini flipped onto its roof in the northbound lanes of Louisiana NE. A 17-year-old female passenger in Turnbull’s car was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital with serious injuries, the complaint said.
