AFR: Four people gathered near food truck struck by racing car

Published Modified

A drunken street racer crashed into four people gathered at a food truck late Saturday night on Central, sending multiple people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Albuquerque police.

Police on Sunday announced the arrest of Abraham Corral Alvarez, 18, with three counts of driving while intoxicated resulting in great bodily harm.

Witnesses told police that three vehicles were racing on Central Avenue when one of the vehicles struck the divider along the ART bus lane, Gilbert Gallegos, a police spokesman, said in a news release. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the pedestrians who were at a food truck near the 4800 block of Central NW at around 10:30 p.m., according to Albuquerque Fire Rescue.

Three of the victims were taken to a local hospital, Gallegos said. On Sunday afternoon, two people were in critical condition and the other was considered stable, he said.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies detained Corral Alvarez, who was driving a black Chrysler that crashed into the pedestrians, Gallegos said.

Albuquerque police officers suspect that Corral Alvarez was driving drunk, Gallegos said. Police also obtained surveillance footage of Central and Rio Grande, which showed the three vehicles driving at a high-rate of speed.

It was one of two serious wrecks in the Albuquerque area late Saturday.

At 10:50 p.m., a person was killed in a single-vehicle rollover wreck at Alameda and Pan American Freeway, near Interstate 25.

The driver died at the scene.

Police said that speed and alcohol appear to have played a factor in the crash.
