NM Goatheads to announce NHL affiliation
New Rio Rancho-based ECHL team set to reveal mascot, make several announcements at upcoming event
The New Mexico Goatheads, the new locally-based ECHL hockey franchise debuting during the 2026-27 season, is set to announce the organization's NHL and AHL affiliation at a coming event at THE BLOCK in Rio Rancho.
According to a news release from the Goatheads, the event will take place Saturday, Feb. 21. The doors open at 11 a.m. and the announcements will begin at noon. The event is free and open to the public.
At the event, the Goatheads will unveil two major bits of news: the team’s official NHL and AHL affiliation, and the introduction of the Goatheads’ mascot.
“This affiliation announcement is an important moment for our organization and our fans,” said Jared Johnson, general manager of the New Mexico Goatheads. “Aligning with NHL and AHL partners as we launch the Goatheads strengthens our foundation and reinforces our commitment to building something special for hockey fans across New Mexico.”
The ECHL is considered the third, or AA, tier of the American hockey system. Above the ECHL are the AHL and finally, the NHL.
Representatives from the Goatheads’ NHL affiliate organization — whomever that might be — will be in attendance.
After the announcement, the team will unveil its new mascot, who will be available for photo opportunities.
Lastly, the Goatheads announced that THE BLOCK will serve as the official watch party location for all away games during the upcoming season.
