Balloon Fiesta, others are organizing eclipse-viewing events around Albuquerque. Here are some of them.
An annular solar eclipse creates a “ring of fire” around the moon
The annular eclipse will begin at 9:13 a.m. Saturday in New Mexico. It will continue progressing until it presents a “ring of fire,” leaving a thin outer ring visible at 10:34 a.m. The ring of fire will burn for about 4 minutes and 50 seconds. The eclipse will end at 10:39 a.m. and the partial eclipse by 12:09 p.m.
Balloon Fiesta Park will be a prime location to view the eclipse’s totality. NASA will broadcast from the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum and will give away 80,000 pairs of solar eclipse viewing glasses for Balloon Fiesta guests.
There are other places around town to enjoy the event. Among them:
From 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
- , 1801 Mountain NW, there will be an opportunity to view the annular eclipse from the museum grounds. There will also be hand-on activities and information about the sun and moon.
- Bernalillo County will also host an event from 8 a.m.-noon at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras. In addition to a special focus on the eclipse, the event features live music, a dedicated play area for children, a variety of artisan vendors, local businesses and nonprofit organizations participating. Carpooling is strongly recommended. Free parking is available at nearby A. Montoya Elementary School and Roosevelt Middle School, as well as a park and ride option at Tijeras Village Hall. Complimentary eclipse viewing glasses will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs for comfortable viewing.
- The Great Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Civil Air Patrol hosts an eclipse viewing barbecue from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Community of Joy Church, 841 Saratoga Drive, in Rio Rancho. Organizers are promising it will be “a big party” and are using it as a recruitment event for both organizations.
- Events also will be happening all over the Department of Cultural Affairs historic sites and museums. A list can be found at
