The community will get a chance to say goodbye to Bernalillo County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Schlattman, as services were announced Thursday for the fallen law enforcement officer.

Schlattman was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer during a traffic stop on Interstate 40, near Carnuel, on Monday.

Schlattman, who became a sergeant in 2024, worked in various capacities for the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, including time as a detective in the special investigations and auto theft units and as a task force officer with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"As we prepare to honor Sgt. Schlattman, we also recognize the extra weight of this date. March 2 would have been Michael’s 53rd birthday," BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said in a news release Thursday. "We ask our community and our partners to keep his family especially close in your thoughts and prayers."

The Sheriff's Office provided the following schedule of services:

  • Public viewing and visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Daniels Family Funerals & Cremation, 4310 Sara Road, in Rio Rancho.
  • Law enforcement procession and memorial service: At 9:15 a.m. Monday, March 2, the procession will go from Daniels to the Rio Rancho Events Center, 3001 Civic Center Circle NE. This will be followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. inside the events center.

"Additional details will be shared as they are confirmed, including procession route, and any staging/parking guidance for agencies, honor guards, and media," she said.
