A deputy with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was killed Monday while on duty, the department said.

"The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is heartbroken to confirm that one of our sergeants was killed in the line of duty this evening,” BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said in an email.

The incident occurred during a traffic stop on I-40 eastbound at milepost 170, she said.

BCSO did not release further details nor did they name the sergeant in a news release sent just after 8 p.m. A news conference is scheduled for later Monday.

Traffic in both lanes of I-40 were closed Monday while authorities investigated.

The sergeant's death was the first officer killed in the line of duty in New Mexico this year. Two officers, deputy Antonio Aleman of the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office and  Timothy Ontiveros of the Bloomfield Police Department, were killed in the line of duty last year.

This is a developing story.
