Bernalillo County prepares for the next winter storm. What that means for your roads — and your driveway
Bernalillo County snowplows prioritize high traffic and windy roads after winter storms.
With the possibility of snow this week, Bernalillo County on Wednesday sent out a reminder from its Operations and Maintenance section on how it manages the roads in response.
There is a priority to which roads are plowed. High traffic and windy roads are cleared first. When snow is pushed onto the shoulder, it may leave a pile of snow in driveways. Property owners are responsible for clearing their own driveway.
“There are about 300 miles of roads in the East Mountains alone and while we wish we could get to all of them at once, it takes time. We are grateful for our crews who work diligently to make sure the roads are safe for everyone who travels on them,” says Director of Operations & Maintenance Antonio Jaramillo.
Below are a few important reminders about plowing snow:
- The goal of the plow truck driver is to clear the road for safe travel, not clear private driveways.
- High traffic and windy roads are cleared first.
- Do not try to stop the plow truck drivers.
- Keep trash bins back on the shoulder, off the roadway.
- Do not try to drive in front of or around the plow trucks while in operation.
- Do not allow children to play in the piles of snow on the shoulder.
- It is not possible to time operations to plow specific roads at specific times of day.
