The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office identified the man deputies killed during a confrontation Saturday in the North Valley as 41-year-old Jonathan Dykstra.

On Thursday, BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales would not say if Dykstra was armed with a weapon, how many deputies shot at him or what led them to open fire.

She said BCSO would not release more information until the agency had interviewed the deputy or deputies involved in the shooting.

Around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the 6000 block of Second NW, north of Montaño. Gonzales did not say why they were in the area.

She said that during the incident, deputies shot Dykstra, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Multi-Agency Task Force is continuing to investigate, Gonzales said.

“Once the involved personnel are interviewed and Sheriff’s Office command staff have been properly briefed on the preliminary details, we will notify members of the media regarding the time and date of a press conference,” she said.

According to court records, Dykstra has struggled with substance abuse in recent years and has been arrested on charges including burglary, fraud, shoplifting and criminal trespass.
