Cibola High student arrested after carrying gun on school bus
A Cibola High School student who allegedly brought a gun on a school bus was arrested Tuesday, according to a letter sent to the school community.
The student, who was identified only by his gender, was carrying a gun in his pocket on the bus, the letter said. Authorities, who had been informed there was a gun on the bus, apprehended him when got off and confiscated the gun, the district said.
“Bringing a firearm on the bus or to school is unacceptable,” Principal Kimberly Finke wrote in the letter. “It endangers the lives of our students and staff and creates a major disruption of the education environment that is so critical to the success of every student at our school.”
Albuquerque Public Schools policy allows for a mandatory one-year expulsion for bringing a gun to school grounds. Doing so is also against state and federal laws.
The school in Northwest Albuquerque did not go into a shelter-in-place, and the student did not make any direct threats to anyone, according to the letter. He also did not enter the school with the gun, the letter says.
“I commend the APS Police officers for their prompt response and effective actions in de-escalating and detaining the student involved,” Finke said in the letter. “Their swift intervention helped to mitigate the immediate threat.”
District spokeswoman Monica Armenta said the student was carrying a 9mm handgun, but that it was not loaded or chambered.
This school year, Armenta said there have been nine guns found on APS campuses, with two more being found on charter school grounds.
