Conservative radio talk show host plans to run for Congress
Eddy Aragon
Radio host and station owner Eddy Aragon announced Monday that he plans to run as a Republican candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District seat in 2026.
The competitive 2nd Congressional District encompasses much of southern New Mexico, part of oil country in eastern New Mexico and reaches north into Albuquerque’s South Valley. The seat is held by Democrat Gabe Vasquez.
Aragon, 50, has never held public office, but this is not his first political campaign. He ran for the CD1 seat held by Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., in 2021 and has previously run for Albuquerque mayor. Aragon is giving himself more time to build a full campaign than in the past, he said.
“I can win this race,” Aragon said. He decided not to throw his hat in the ring for Albuquerque’s mayoral race, because he thinks with a crowded field, Mayor Tim Keller will safely win reelection.
Aragon plans to focus his campaign on crime, New Mexico’s economy and education.
“We need more privatization of education. I think the approach that’s being taken at the national level is important. We don’t want to do without the money, but we definitely want to do without the bureaucracy,” Aragon said.
Aragon thinks President Donald Trump has been widely misunderstood. “I would absolutely consider his first 100 days to be a success, not a failure,” Aragon said. But he said he would oppose Medicare or Medicaid cuts being considered in the Republican-led House as part of Trump’s tax package.
