Police are looking for a group of people who removed at least 17 fire extinguishers from the parking garage under Civic Plaza and sprayed them, causing more than $60,000 in damage.

The vandalism occurred in two incidents on two consecutive Sundays this month, Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers coordinator Alicia Hernandez said in a news release.

The first took place around 6:30 p.m. on March 9, when five people entered the parking lot, removed the fire extinguishers, and fired them toward many vehicles, Hernandez said. A week later, around 5:50 p.m., seven people entered the garage, removed at least six more fire extinguishers, and damaged more vehicles, she said.

The cost of the damages is about $67,000, Hernandez said.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP (7867), p3tips.com/531, or text “ABQCS” to 738477. You can remain anonymous.
