Documents detail UPS truck hijacking in Bernalillo County

A UPS driver is OK after a man allegedly seized control of his truck west of Albuquerque on Monday afternoon.

Mukhammed-Emin Idrisov, 35, of Brooklyn, New York, was arrested Monday on false imprisonment and aggravated assault charges.

Idrisov currently does not have an attorney.

Court records show a judge on Tuesday ordered Idrisov’s release on his own recognizance. He will be on pretrial supervision as he awaits trial.

Around 3:15 p.m. Monday, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a possible kidnapping at mile marker 138 on Interstate 40, about two miles west of the Rio Puerco.

The caller, a UPS driver, told deputies he was heading east on I-40 but could not pull over because a man — later identified as Idrisov — was inside the truck, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. The driver told deputies Idrisov kept reaching inside a bag with “unknown weapons,” the complaint states.

Deputies said they saw the truck at the Atrisco Vista exit and followed it until it stopped just before the Unser exit.

The driver told deputies he was delivering packages in To’hajiilee on Tribal Road 56 when Idrisov swerved in front of him in a pickup and told him to pull over. He told deputies that Idrisov approached him and said, “They are trying to kill me. Please call for help,” according to the complaint.

As vehicles drove by, the man told deputies, Idrisov hid on the side of the UPS truck before getting in and telling him to drive, deputies said. The driver told deputies he did not know whether someone was trying to hurt Idrisov, so he did not stop, the complaint states.

When the men heard sirens, the driver told Idrisov, the “cops are here,” the complaint states. Idrisov put a hand in a bag, put the bag up toward the driver and said, “Those are not real cops. You need to keep driving.”

He told deputies since Idrisov had a knife in his waistband, “he had reason to believe he had more weapons,” according to the complaint. As the driver tried slowing down, Idrisov put the bag up to him again and told him to keep going, deputies said.

As the driver came to a stop, he told police, Idrisov showed him the inside of the bag that was empty before putting a knife on the dashboard, the complaint states.

“We are aware of the incident and are working with authorities to investigate,” UPS spokesperson Becca Hunnicutt said in an email to the Journal. “We are thankful our driver is safe.”
