Española woman charged in death of 15-month-old daughter
A woman was arrested after her 15-month-old daughter died from exposure to fentanyl.
Ariana Vigil, 26, of Española, is charged with child abuse resulting in death and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Vigil is being held at the Rio Arriba County Detention Center.
At about 11:30 a.m. April 1, New Mexico State Police responded to a call of an unresponsive 15-month-old at Presbyterian Española Hospital.
When officers arrived, Vigil told police the girl was in a play area at home when Vigil saw her put a piece of burnt tin foil near her mouth, according to a statement of probable cause filed in Rio Arriba County Magistrate Court. Vigil told police 10 minutes after rinsing the girl’s mouth, she became unresponsive and later died, police said.
Vigil told police she left the burnt foils in the bedroom where police later found them on Vigil’s bed near a baby bottle, the probable cause states.
“Due to Ariana’s recklessness, (the girl) was exposed to fentanyl and died as a result of this exposure,” police said. “... Ariana understood the dangers of fentanyl and the dangers of placing these used foils on the floor and did nothing to change her habits.”
