Families can choose their charter school at Albuquerque School Fair
Local families can learn more about alternative schooling options on Saturday during the Albuquerque School Fair.
The event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Albuquerque, 1000 Woodward NE, is free and open to the public. It will include representatives from more than 60 different pre-K-12 magnet schools, private and public charter schools, as well as homeschooling options, with information available in English and Spanish.
Angela Lopez, field director of Public Charter Schools of New Mexico, has provided support for the event for years and enjoys watching families interact with various officials.
“As they walk from table to table and meet different school representatives, a light bulb will click and the child just finds the right fit for them,” Lopez said. “A family will speak to a school representative and goes, ‘This is where we’re meant to be.’ That is a beautiful feeling.”
Her organization will co-sponsor the event with the National School Choice Awareness Foundation. The event comes as the kick-off to National School Choice Week, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1.
“In New Mexico, one of the great things about raising kids here is our laws allow for school choice,” Lopez said.
The event promises fun, with activities such as face painting, balloon artists and a live DJ, Lopez said.
