Female inmate injured in attack during hearing at MDC

A woman was seriously injured when a fellow inmate stabbed her with a pen during an arraignment inside the Metropolitan Detention Center on Wednesday, according to jail officials.

The injured woman's condition was unknown, but she is expected to survive, MDC spokesperson Candace Hopkins said.

The women were not identified. Hopkins described the incident as a "seemingly unprovoked attack."

Around 12:15 p.m., during a scheduled court hearing, a 24-year-old woman got up from her seat and attacked a 49-year-old with "an improvised weapon, believed to be a pen," Hopkins said. The woman was stabbed in the "upper body and facial area."

Corrections officers separated the inmates and provided aid to the injured woman, she said. The 49-year-old was then taken to a hospital.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and MDC Office of Professional Standards are investigating, Hopkins said.

"As this matter is part of an active investigation, no further details will be released at this time," she said.
