Hit-and-run crash that killed off-duty officer goes cold
Authorities continue to seek tips regarding Bianca Quintana's death
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office is still looking for answers but has hit a wall in its investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash that left Albuquerque Police Department officer Bianca Quintana dead nearly a year and a half ago.
"This is considered a cold case but we continue to investigate any tip we receive and would appreciate more tips if anyone has any," BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said Wednesday.
Around 12:45 a.m. Aug. 14, 2024, deputies responded to a crash near Coors and Chapulin SW in the South Valley.
The driver, who hit the off-duty officer and then fled, was not found. Quintana, 31, died at the scene.
Investigators said a Volkswagen vehicle was involved in the incident. Specific details about the year, model and color of the vehicle were still under investigation, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release issued two days after the crash.
Quintana joined APD in 2022 and worked in the Foothills Area Command at the time of her death.
At her September 2024 celebration of life, Quintana's uncle Tony Alderette said he hoped someone would turn themselves in.
"It’s really hard,” he said. “How can they be living with what they did? How can somebody live day by day knowing that they took somebody’s life?"
To submit tips, Gonzales said, people can go to Tip 411.
Or, they can call Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP. Crime Stoppers liaison Alicia Hernandez said they are offering up to a $10,000 reward.
