An off-duty Albuquerque police officer was fatally struck by a driver in a hit-and-run crash early Wednesday morning in the South Valley.

The Albuquerque Police Department identified the officer as Bianca Quintana, who joined the department in 2022 and worked in the Foothills Area Command.

“This is a tragic loss for the Albuquerque Police Department and especially for the family and friends of Officer Bianca Quintana,” Police Chief Harold Medina said in a statement. “The entire APD family extends our most sincere condolences to Officer Quintana’s family.”

The driver, who authorities say struck Quintana and fled the scene, has not been found. The incident is being investigated by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Jayme Gonzales, a BCSO spokeswoman, said detectives were trying to get a description of the suspect vehicle.

“The investigation is ongoing, and details are still being gathered. We will provide more information as it becomes available,” she said in a news release early Wednesday.

Gonzales said BCSO responded around 12:45 a.m. to a pedestrian crash near Coors and Chapulin SW.

“The deceased has been identified as an off-duty officer from the Albuquerque Police Department,” she said in the release.

Gonzales said BCSO is taking the lead on the crash investigation but is “maintaining close communications with the Albuquerque Police Department given the involvement of one of their officers.”

She added, “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and our colleagues at the Albuquerque Police Department during this difficult time.”
