How did this New Mexico restaurant do at the James Beard awards?
Campo at Los Poblanos, the only New Mexico nomination to earn a finalist spot at the 35th annual James Beard Award ceremony in Chicago, will not be bringing home the coveted award.
Campo was one of five restaurants vying to win the award for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program. The honor instead went to Baltimore fine dining establishment Charleston.
This year marked the furthest Campo has made it in the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards. Representatives for the restaurant could not be reached for comment Monday.
Head chef Chris Bethoney was a semifinalist for Best Chef Southwest in 2024 and his predecessor Jonathan Perno was a semifinalist for the same award in 2019 and a finalist in 2020.
The last time a New Mexico restaurant or chef won the award was in 2022 when Santa Fe-based Fernando Olea won Best Chef Southwest for Sazón.
Albuquerque, despite being named one of the top food cities in the world by the national food publication Eater in 2023, has not had a chef or restaurant crowned a James Beard winner since Mary Gonzales and Mary & Tito’s Cafe brought home the America’s Classics honor in 2010. It’s the only restaurant in the city to win the award.
