'Human error' results in Bernalillo County inmate's premature release, according to MDC
A man has been erroneously released from the Metropolitan Detention Center.
On Sept. 13, John James Romero, 29, of Las Vegas, N.M., was arrested and charged with three counts of criminal trespass and a count of resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer.
Two days later, he was released for serving two of the trespass charges, Metropolitan Detention Center spokesperson Daniel Trujillo said in a news release on Thursday.
“However, the third trespass charge and the resisting, evading, or obstructing charge required a $25 cash or surety bond,” Trujillo said. “Initial findings indicate that human error resulted in Romero being erroneously released on recognizance for those charges.”
On Sunday, Trujillo said “Romero is not currently in our custody and has not been since his release.”
MDC is continuing to investigate the incident, he said.
“Once the review complete,” Trujillo said, “officials will determine what corrective actions will be taken.”
