Human remains found near train tracks in Artesia

Law enforcement is investigating after human remains were found near train tracks in Artesia, the Artesia Police Department said in a release over Facebook Wednesday.

Authorities did not say if the remains, found at two separate locations, belonged to one or more people. It is unclear if foul play is suspected.

"This investigation remains active and ongoing," the department said in its Facebook post. Police asked anyone who may have information related to the case to call detectives at 575-746-5000.

On Monday, officers with the Artesia Police Department were called to the 300 block of First Street after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train engineer reported skeletal remains near the train tracks, according to the news release.

Officers conducted an investigation and discovered additional human remains under a dock near the Baker & Stephens Tire Co. building, a short distance from the railroad tracks, police said.

The remains were taken to the University of New Mexico Laboratory of Human Osteology to be studied. A preliminary report found the remains were likely at the location for over a year, the news release states.

Police said cadaver dogs were deployed Tuesday to search for additional evidence.
