A deputy with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was killed while on duty, the department said.

"The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is heartbroken to confirm that one of our sergeants was killed in the line of duty this evening,” BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said in an email.

The incident occurred during a traffic stop on I-40 eastbound at milepost 170, she said.

BCSO did not release further details nor did they name the sergeant in a news release sent just after 8 p.m. A news conference is scheduled for later Monday.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation reports I-40 eastbound is closed at Tramway to milepost 173 and I-40 westbound is closed at milepost 175 near State Road 14.

"Drivers should avoid the area, if possible," Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said.

This is a developing story.
