Japanese celebration at BioPark honors ancestral spirits

Published Modified

White round lanterns adorned the trees, and twinkling lights flickered atop the water as floating lanterns gently danced on the surface of the Japanese Pond during the Obon Festival at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden on Friday evening. This traditional Japanese celebration honors ancestral spirits and is rooted in Buddhist customs that commemorate the spirits of loved ones who have passed away. Approximately 600 people gathered to celebrate their ancestors and remember their departed loved ones. The sound of drums echoed through the gardens as attendees wandered along the paths, surrounded by the vibrant greenery of the foliage.
