The director of operations of a popular sandwich shop in New Mexico was killed after a car crash in Mesilla on Saturday.

At about 2:30 a.m., the Mesilla Marshals Office responded to a call of a single-vehicle crash in a Mesilla park.

When deputies arrived, they found a white BMW near a water fountain with a man — later identified as Jersey Mike’s Director of Operations David Leyva, of Albuquerque — inside, according to a Mesilla Marshals Office social media post.

A marshals office traffic investigator said Leyva was heading south on Calle de El Paso approaching Calle Pacana when he “failed to negotiate the curve, striking the curb and flew airborne into the town of Mesilla’s park overturning three times on the lawn.”

According to the post, the investigator said Leyva was speeding past the 35 mph limit and was not wearing a seatbelt. Mesilla firefighters later attempted life-saving measures on Leyva, who died inside the ambulance, deputies said.

Toxicology results will be sent to the traffic investigator “at a later date,” the post states.

Leyva, who works at franchises in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, was in Las Cruces visiting the city’s Jersey Mike’s location, deputies said.

Jersey Mike’s has 3,184 locations across the country, including 12 in New Mexico, according to its website.
