Kirtland says Trump administration directive for return to in-person work lead to longer wait times at entrance
Kirtland Air Force Base officials say the Trump administration’s return-to-work order has spurred “frustration and inconvenience” over longer wait times at the entrance gates for employees, airmen and others trying to get onto the Albuquerque base.
The KAFB Public Affairs Office said in a news release Friday that the monthly average of people coming onto the base spiked from 12,830 a day in 2024 to 17,227 this year.
“When comparing the data from 2024 to 2025, the increase in traffic volume is clear,” the base said, adding that “February alone saw nearly a 100,000 increase in scans per month compared to 2024.”
The news comes more than a month after an emailed memo from the Office of Personnel Management, the government’s human resources agency, issued several directives to federal workers — including that most of them return to their offices full time.
“Recent directives requiring a return to in-person work have impacted the installation, resulting in increased traffic,” KAFB said. The longer wait is “causing frustration and inconvenience” for those who work on base.
Officials thanked personnel for “patience and understanding as our defenders work to manage congestion and ensure everyone’s safety and security.”
