The New Mexico Department of Justice on Saturday announced that $285,000 in settlement money from a 2022 lawsuit will go toward the Las Vegas New Mexico Community Foundation for expanded health care grants.

The foundation, which will oversee the funds, will award the grants to nonprofits in San Miguel County for “community health care needs,” including behavioral.

The money comes as a result of a December 2022 lawsuit filed by then-Attorney General Hector Balderas, who sued the Alta Vista Regional Hospital in Las Vegas and its previous owner, Quorum Health Corp., for violations of the Unfair Practices Act, namely misleading or false advertising and unconscionable trade practices.

The hospital has since been purchased by Nashville, Tennessee-based Dava Health Inc.

“We are pleased with the result of this settlement and to be presenting these funds to the Las Vegas New Mexico Community Foundation,” Attorney General Raúl Torrez said in a statement. “These resources will be used to improve healthcare across San Miguel County and we look forward to seeing the benefit these funds can bring to the community.”

Added Elmo Baca, executive director of the LVNMCF, “We are grateful to the NMDOJ for its work in securing these settlement funds, and we look forward to awarding this grant money to worthy nonprofit organizations serving our communities.”

Nonprofits interested in getting grant money from the settlement can call the foundation at 505-600-2868 or email admin@lvnmcf.org.
