Lobos fans face tighter base access at Air Force Academy
A citizenship question on the U.S. Air Force Academy’s visitor pre-registration system.
Lobos fans heading to Colorado Springs for the Air Force game on Saturday can expect to clear an unfamiliar security hurdle this year.
The U.S. Air Force Academy tightened up base entry requirements on Jan. 4, requiring visitors to obtain a base pass to visit the campus, including those attending sporting events.
The new process requires ticket holders to request a base pass using the Academy’s visitor pre-registration system.
Be prepared to answer some detailed questions, including citizenship status, date of birth, Social Security number, gender, driver’s license number and mobile phone number.
The University of New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team will face off against the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons on Saturday.
Stepped-up security was put into place following a New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans when a man drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street.
“The commanding general’s always taking a look at the threat levels and at the base security levels,” Academy spokesman Anthony Mayne said Thursday in a phone interview.
“We’re worried about the safety of our cadets and our families that live on this installation,” he said. “You can get on the base, but you need to obtain a base pass and you need to have a reason to get on the base.”
Anyone who purchased a ticket to attend the game on Saturday should have received a QR code that gives them access to the pre-registration system.
The first question asks, “Are you a citizen of the United States?”
If any non-citizens plan to attend the game, Mayne recommends calling the base pass and registration office at 719-333-0443 or 719-333-0440.
