Lomas closures planned so new water pipeline can be installed
The 2-acre Winrock Park is pictured in this 2024 file photo. The Winrock development will be the initial customer for reclaimed water that will be delivered with a new 3-mile long pipeline. Pipeline construction will cause closures on Lomas NE next week.
Westbound Lomas NE will be closed between Wyoming and Louisiana on Monday and Tuesday so a new water pipeline can be installed.
The same section of Lomas going east will be closed Oct. 15 through 16. There will be detours in place and business access will be maintained through posted detours, the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority announced Friday. The closure dates could change. Water and sewer service should not be interrupted.
The water authority is installing 3 miles of new pipeline to bring reclaimed, nonpotable water for irrigation customers from Southern SE to the Winrock area. The $11 million project is being funded with a combination of Water Authority capital improvement money and a loan from the state, according to water authority spokesman Dave Morris.
The utility is expanding its nonpotable reuse system for landscape irrigation, which is essential to long-term water resource management for Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, according to a news release.
The pipeline is meant to serve the Uptown area. Winrock is the initial customer for the water, but it will be available for sale to other commercial and government customers along the route, Morris said. Winrock Town Center has been redeveloped in recent years. A 2-acre park with a pond that uses recycled water was unveiled at the outdoor shopping center last year.
The new pipeline will connect to Winrock’s existing reuse system. The overall project should be completed next summer. This is likely the only time Lomas will be impacted by the project, but streets farther north may be affected as the pipeline is extended, Morris said.
