A suspected serial rapist was arrested Saturday and accused of picking up women, threatening them with a knife or box cutter and raping them in the International District.

Josue Macias, 35, of Albuquerque, is charged with second-degree criminal sexual penetration, kidnapping and assault with the intent to commit a violent felony. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

A license plate reader located Macias' vehicle in Southwest Albuquerque where he was arrested without incident, APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release Sunday.

Macias has been linked to three rapes since January 2023, police said.

In each one, Macias approached the woman in a vehicle near The Downs Racetrack & Casino at Central and Louisiana, offered them a ride and then took them to alleyways where they were raped, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Two of the women told police Macias held a knife or box cutter to their throats during the incidents, police said.

Macias told police he picked up the women to have sex with them multiple times, the complaint states. When they refused to get out of his vehicle afterwards, he told police, he brandished a "razor" to get them to leave, according to the court document.

Detectives are searching for other possible victims, Gallegos said. If anyone has information, he said, they can call detectives at 505-242-COPS.
