Man arrested in fatal shooting on East Central
Albuquerque Police Department officials investigate a homicide off Cagua SE, near Central and San Pedro, on Monday.
A man was arrested by police after he allegedly shot another man in the shoulder — killing him — Monday morning in Southeast Albuquerque.
Darius Ray, 26, was arrested at the Sundowner Apartments on Monday evening and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center. Ray is charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence in the death of 33-year-old Jonathan Snagg.
Snagg was taken to a hospital, where he died of his wounds, according to a news release from the Albuquerque Police Department.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 8:35 a.m. after Snagg walked into a Circle K convenience store, on Central and San Pedro SE, and told a security guard working at the gas station, “Help me, he shot me,” according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court on Tuesday. The security guard told police Snagg had run from the Sundowner Apartments to the store.
Officers found surveillance footage from the apartment complex that showed Ray sprinting away from an area where officers discovered a “pool of blood,” the complaint states. A witness told police they heard a loud pop that they “believed to be the sound of a firework” and saw Snagg lying on his back.
Police said the witness told them Ray was standing over Snagg while holding a handgun and blood was coming from Snagg’s shoulder. Ray reportedly helped Snagg from the ground and guided him toward Central before shoving him.
Court records show Ray had a warrant out for his arrest in a 2023 case at the time of the homicide. In that case, Ray was charged with battery and criminal damage to property after allegedly punching his neighbor.
