A man is accused of kidnapping two of his ex-girlfriend’s children and running over a third child as he fled the domestic incident early Saturday morning in Northeast Albuquerque.

Duwayne Morgan Jr., 23, is charged with two counts of kidnapping, three counts of child abuse, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and battery against a household member.

The incident led to an Amber Alert being issued around 6 a.m. for 1-year-old Omari Morgan and 7-year-old Jaylah Trujillo. The alert said Morgan, shirtless, had taken the children from an apartment near Comanche and Carlisle.

Police recovered the children during a standoff outside Morgan’s apartment and he was eventually detained. Morgan has since been booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Around 2 a.m. police were called to an apartment on Lafayette NE near Comanche after a woman reported Morgan took two of her children, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. The woman told police she and her three children were fleeing a domestic dispute with Morgan when he attacked her.

The woman said she was able to get her youngest children into her vehicle, but Morgan hopped in the driver’s seat, the complaint states. The woman told police her 13-year-old jumped on the hood to try and stop Morgan, but he drove off anyway.

Police said the teen was run over and suffered a fractured collarbone but is expected to recover. The woman’s vehicle was found sometime after at an apartment complex southwest of Montgomery and Wyoming.

Police said Morgan’s phone was pinging inside an apartment and, when they called, a woman answered and said Morgan and the children were in the apartment. Morgan initially refused to surrender and the woman walked the children out to officers.

Eventually, Morgan came outside and was arrested.
