Man fatally struck by city worker inside Santa Fe mall parking lot

A city of Santa Fe bus driver drove a city-owned car into a man who was sitting at a shopping mall bus stop, killing him, on Monday.

No charges have been filed against the driver "at this time," Santa Fe Deputy Chief Ben Valdez told the Journal.

Officers responded to the incident at the Santa Fe Plaza Mall around 4:35 p.m. and found the man dead.

The driver told officers that instead of going in reverse, he hit the gas, causing the car to drive over a curb and hit a bus stop bench a man was sitting on, Valdez said.

"The exact cause of the crash has not been determined at this time as this investigation is in the preliminary stages," he said.

Police said the man's identity is not being released until his next of kin has been notified.

Anyone who saw the crash or has video of the incident is encouraged to call the crash investigator, Julian Martinez, at 505-955-5402.
