A man who was struck and killed by a driver on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque on Wednesday had been running from New Mexico State Police.

Officer Wilson Silver, a State Police spokesperson, identified the man as Dale Hinds, 53.

Silver said an officer was headed east on I-40 around 12:30 p.m. when he saw a pickup truck stopped in the far right lane of the Carlisle exit ramp.

He said the officer stopped to check on the driver — identified as Hinds — and learned the vehicle was reported stolen. Silver said the officer also found out that Hinds had multiple felony warrants for evading police and drug charges, among others.

Hinds ran from the officer toward I-40, crossing the eastbound lanes of traffic, Silver said. A driver struck Hinds as he was fleeing, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was snarled for hours afterward while police investigated. Hinds' body could be seen lying in the middle of I-40, his body surrounded by law enforcement vehicles.
