A man could serve two decades in prison after being involved in a street race that killed two adults and severely injured two children and a teenager on Louisiana NE in 2023.

On Friday, a jury found Andy Doreste-Saumell guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, great bodily injury by vehicle and child abuse in the Oct. 8, 2023, crash that killed Jenna Hamilton and critically injured two children in the car. Tyler Turnbull, who was racing with Doreste-Saumell, was also killed.

“It should never have happened,” Hamilton’s mother, Paula Mills, told the Journal in December.

Doreste-Saumell faces up to two decades in prison, 2nd Judicial District Court spokesperson Nancy Laflin said in a news release. Sentencing is scheduled for June 16, according to court records.

“These cases are very difficult and we hope this brings some justice for the families who suffered and lost so much,” Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman said in a statement.

At 7:20 p.m., Doreste-Saumell was racing at high speed on Louisiana NE when both vehicles hit a white Toyota Camry in the intersection of Dellwood NE, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Doreste-Saumell told police he was driving a BMW when he saw a green Mini Cooper “driving fast” near Louisiana and Menaul NE, police said. Doreste-Saumell said he changed lanes and was “keeping up with the speeds” of the Mini Cooper at the time of the crash, the complaint states. Laflin said he was traveling 103 mph.

A traffic video at the intersection of Louisiana and Dellwood showed the BMW speeding when Hamilton’s Camry pulled into the intersection, resulting in the collision, police said. Doreste-Saumell and his then 6-year-old son, who was riding in the BMW, were uninjured, police said.

The Mini Cooper flipped onto its roof in the northbound lanes of Louisiana NE. A 17-year-old female passenger in Turnbull’s car was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said.
