Man killed after crashing motorcycle into semitrailer in Northwest ABQ
Police say a speeding motorcyclist ran a red light on the West Side on Tuesday morning, crashing into a semitractor-trailer that was making a turn and killing the cyclist.
The crash happened just after 7 a.m. at 98th and Avalon NW, Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release.
Based on the investigation, a Harley-Davidson was seen going south on 98th "at a high rate of speed," running a red light at Interstate 40. At 98th and Avalon, a semitractor-trailer was making a left-hand turn from eastbound Avalon to northbound 98th. The semi had a protected green arrow turn signal, investigators said.
The motorcycle ran the red light at the intersection and hit the trailer of the truck. The motorcycle driver, who was not identified by police, died at the scene.
"The crash is still under investigation," Gallegos said. "However, the primary cause of the crash at this time is the high speed and failure to yield at the red light for the motorcycle."
