Nine windows at this elementary school were damaged by gunfire over the weekend
Dolores Gonzales Elementary School in Albuquerque on Thursday.
An elementary school in the Barelas neighborhood was damaged by gunfire over the holiday weekend.
Albuquerque Public Schools’ Dolores Gonzales Elementary School had several windows shattered by bullets. According to the Albuquerque Police Department, shots were detected at 3:35 a.m. Sunday by nearby gunshot detection technology.
“We also got a call from Metro Security about several males shooting into a vehicle. The school is about a block away, and the school called the following morning to advise some rounds had struck the building,” APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said.
APS police have taken over the investigation.
Nine windows had to be replaced as a result of the bullets, according to APS spokesperson Martin Salazar, who said, "It’s too soon to say" how much the repairs cost.
“The damaged windows were discovered before students arrived at school on Tuesday morning,” Salazar said. “The APS Police Department was notified immediately.”
He said that he is "not at liberty to discuss" how many bullets were recovered at the school.
Dolores Gonzales serves around 300 students.
“APS Police and APD are currently investigating vandalism on school property, which appears to have been caused by bullets striking several windows over the Labor Day weekend,” school principal Parisa Asgharzadeh wrote to parents in a letter on Tuesday. “No one was on campus at the time of the incident.”
She added that additional counseling services would be available for students.
The district asks anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP.
“We all have a role to play in ensuring our school remains a safe place for learning,” Asgharzadeh said. “Remember, if you see or hear something, say something.”
