NRA files petition to challenge governor's gun ban
The National Rifle Association announced early Friday that it has filed a petition against Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's public health order banning firearm possession in Bernalillo County.
The NRA, in its statement announcing the petition before the New Mexico Supreme Court, wrote that other parties to the lawsuit include the state's Republican and Libertarian parties, "several members of the legislature, law-abiding gun owners, law-enforcement professionals" and others.
The announcement in the wake of a federal judge already issuing a temporary restraining order through Oct. 3 that prevents the state from enforcing the ban on carrying guns in public. Lujan Grisham issued the 30-day ban on Sept. 8 in response to what she described as a public health emergency caused by gun violence.
Lujan Grisham held a press conference on Friday in Albuquerque to announce an amended public health order.
The NRA statement said: "These orders were issued despite last year’s Supreme Court ruling that the Second Amendment protects a right to carry a firearm outside the home. But even worse, the New Mexico Constitution also guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. New Mexican courts have proclaimed that the right to keep and bear arms 'stands shoulder to shoulder with the most basic guarantees of individual liberty against the power of the state.'"
