LAS CRUCES — One man is dead and another injured after being shot by Las Cruces police Thursday morning.

The shooting took place on Walnut Street, across from Lynn Community Middle School, at approximately 6:30 a.m. The location is close to where the March 21 Young Park shooting took place, but Thursday’s shooting was not apparently related to that incident.

The officer, who also was not identified, was not injured and has been placed on standard administrative leave. The wounded man, who has not been identified, was expected to recover, but details of his condition were not disclosed.

Details remained scarce Thursday evening as the Las Cruces Police Department and a multi-agency officer-involved incident task force began the first stages of an investigation.

Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story said additional information would be provided at a news conference scheduled for May 20 to allow staff to participate in National Police Week next week.

“Due to the unfortunate timing of this incident, and with many of our department members traveling to Washington, D.C., for National Police Week to honor Officer Jonah Hernandez, we will delay having a news conference until after our return,” Story announced in a news release. Hernandez was a Las Cruces police officer killed in the line of duty in 2024.

A segment of Walnut Street was closed Thursday morning, but the school remained open with a modified school bus and parent drop-off area accessible from a side road. Police said the incident did not take place on school grounds.

The task force investigating the shooting includes officials from New Mexico State Police, LCPD, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police.
